Dash for ipod instal2/21/2024 ![]() I installed the lower dash first, put the radios in place and plugged the cables back in. Once everything dried, I put the dash vents and all the *****/switches/plugs back into the upper dash panel. ![]() ![]() I than routed the ISimple Fire-wire ipad/phone cable up to the top of the dash and let it hang until I installed the dash panels. I didn't take any pictures of the wiring as the truck was hot and I just wanted to get in, get done, and get out. I simply spliced into the power and ground wires for the factory stereo for the charging feature, and than plugged the RCA style plugs into the back of my stereo deck for the AUX in. While the dash parts all dried from being painted I took a few minuets to wire up the ISimple adapter. I roughed up the entire panel to allow me to prime it Once the Bondo dried I took the Medium grit sanding sponge and went to town, knocking down all the rough edges. Now that I filled the gap in the dash with the superglue/baking soda mix and ground it smooth I took the Bondo Putty and spread it evenly along the top and sides to help smooth the transition between the IPad tray and the dash panel (makes it hard as cement) I continued to apply this in layers until it was just over the top of the dash, than ground it down with the Dremel I took some tape and filled the gap, than added some superglue into the cavity and dusted it with Baking Soda. ![]() So I used an old trick from my model railway days. I also considered just using Bondo, but because of the depth of the cavity I was afraid it would crack over time. I thought about plastic welding some filler pieces in, but I didn't want to run to the store again to buy the tool. Once I was happy with the location I marked out on the dash where I would need to cut in order to fit IPad Tray into placeīecause I didn't listen the the age old adage of measure twice cut once I ended up taking a little more out of the top of my dash than I needed to. Now that I had the radios out of the upper dash panel I played with the IPad mounting tray until I was happy with the location I started by removing my radios from the upper dash, and rough cutting some openings in the new Lower Dash Panel from an F-650 Now that I had all my parts and tools ready I could start playing PANEL ASY - INSTRUMENT TRIM | Genuine Ford | 4C4Z-7004302-HAĭremel with girding discs and cutting bit Metra Aftermarket Radio Installation Kit for Select Vehicles Black 99-5806 - Best Buyġx Lower Dash from F650 Manual Transmission Shop 3M 2.87-in x 4.87-in 320-Grit Commercial Sanding Sponge at ġx Metra Aftermarket Radio install kit for a 99 Mercury Cougar (just need a few pieces) Shop 3M 2.87-in x 4.87-in Conventional Sanding Sponge at Shop Devcon 0.85 oz 5 Minute Epoxy at Ģx aerosol cans of Duplicolor High Fill Primer - grayĢx aerosol cans of SEM ColorCoat matched to the factory brown of my interiorĢx aerosol cans of Duplicolor Premium Enamel Clear Coat, Matte Finishġx Bondo Professional Glazing and Spot Puttyīondo 801 - Professional Glazing & Spot Putty | O'Reilly Auto Parts Shop GORILLA 0.71-oz Super Glue Adhesive at I decided this was the route I wanted to go.Īfter lots of research I accumulated the supplies I would need.ġx I-Pad Mini DISD kit from Fifield Fabricationsįifield Fab Custom Car Audio - iPad MINI KITSġx ISimple JamLink Car (charge and get audio from the ipad to the deck without bluetooth) I saw a kit by Fifield Fabrications that was a little cheaper on the wallet, and could be chopped to fit the dash as it was a slide in design. I looked into several kits and concluded that the dash on my style truck was just slightly to short to allow the float mounts seen elsewhere, and I don't have the skill to build up the dash to fit one correctly. I finally read a few articles on actually building them into the dash, and decided that was what I wanted to do. The head unit I had in the truck doesn't support blue tooth, but I love the factory look of it, no neon disco lights or anything so I didn't want to change that. I thought long and hard about a RamMount or PadHolder but just wanted something cleaner. The first thing I did was research different ways to install the ipad. Verizon giving me a new ipad mini was just the excuse I needed to re-engineer the dash. I never really liked the way it came out when I put the two radios in the old opening. That is cleaner than your initial single din/CB install (no disrespect intended)!! I especially like what you did with the old deck, that cubby doesn't really hold anything worthwhile. No disrespect taken.
